Simpler Key - Max for Live Device

Isn't it frustrating not having a 'Root Key' option in Ableton Live's Simpler? Instead you need to use the Transpose control to adjust in semitones the difference between your sample's key and C. The math isn't difficult but it could be Simpler right?

That's why I made Simpler Key, a little companion for Simpler that allows you to set the Root Key of the Simpler. Just drop your sample into Simpler, set the key of your sample in Simpler Key and it'll automatically adjust the transpose control of the Simpler in semitones.

It's smart too because it'll transpose the sample the least distance: for example if your sample is in G, if you pitched that down to match C it'd be -7 semitones and pitching it up would be +5 semitones, so in that case it'd pitch it up. If your sample is in E, pitching it down to match C would be -4 semitones, pitching it up would be +8 - so it'd pitch it down - the least amount of semitones to get it in tune.

It also has an octave control, so if after setting the key of your sample you feel it's too low you can easily pitch it up an octave, or 2, or 3. Same for pitching it down.

What can't it do? Well it can't recognise the key of your sample but if you're using modern sample libraries most will have the sample labelled with a key. If not you can try out each key in Simpler Key to see which fits the best - also then finding out the key of the sample.

It's not magic, it's not overly complicated - it's just a simple tool to help you move faster in Ableton Live.

ALSO if you don't have Max For Live I have also included a Midi Effect rack which does similar but just using the standard Pitch Midi effect. Doesn't look as pretty but does the job too.

Note: Simpler Key is a Max For Live device and requires Ableton Live 12+ Suite or Ableton Live 12+ Standard with Max For Live. The Midi Effect rack version (also included) will work on any version of Ableton Live 12+.
